Response to Nan

I never said I wasn't going to follow the diet. I am aware of the reasons, the weight of the fetus as well as the risk of under or over amounts of amniotic fluid that can also occur - my brother was 10 lbs, while the rest of us were only 8 lbs because the doctor didn't diagnose my mom's gd. My mom had it again with Crayola, and she was normal size because they caught it that time. Sue's first 2 kids were in the 9 lb range, her 3rd in the 8 lb range - keeping to the diet kept them from being 10 pounders. Like I said, I wasn't surprised that I failed the test - it was just a matter of whether or not I was going to be borderline or full diabetes. With my genes, I knew it was coming. I have no objections to following a diet, I'm just not looking forward to the extra weekly visits to the hospital I DON'T like so that someone can check my numbers like I'm an idiot. I'm just glad that it is summer vacation because my job isn't conducive to taking time off in the middle of the school day.

The group class I have to go to tomorrow uses scare tactics - when Sue went they made it sound like your baby would DIE because you have gd (no, really, Sue's doctor called them the next week and chewed them out...see why I don't like this hospital? Btw, I am not planning on having my baby there, I will go to Orem instead, since they try to scare everyone into having C-sections at that hospital) - so I told Werty to sit this one out, he was anxious enough when I failed the test. Bascially, since people who get gd usually have either a genetic predisposition or poor nutrition/lifestlye, they treat you like you are the latter. I remember at a RS Enrichment, gd came up and one of my friends made a comment to a girl that was expecting, "Don't worry, only really fat people get gd." I SO wanted to slap someone. Or at least point out that at the other end of the room was someone who was a slim Asian woman who had just had her 2nd child and had gd with him.

I know Nan that this is your professional field, and I appreciate your advice, and I know you are just being encouraging, but don't worry too much. I had to wait a long time to start having children, and that gave me time to study up on gd since I knew it was one of my risk factors. (Don't forget that I also don't want to fry my pancreas since that's what killed my grandmother - believe me, I know.)

Vegas Trip - Msg to Ddonn

So , here is the new proposal for our trip to Vegas. We drive down with the grandparents the next week, and stay only three days. It is a shorter trip than the original plan, but my Grandfather is having a huge birthday party that weekend and he needs to be back with enough time to make preparations. Ddonn, I sent you an email with more details.

Then, Werty and I are planning on attending the family reunion that weekend. So, it's going to be a busy week. I have no idea how tired I will be from a road trip, but it looks like I get to find out - twice in one week. :P

Trip to Vegas Postponed

We went to an open house at my grandparents' today. My uncle and his kids are in SLC on vacation, so it was a chance for family to come by and visit with them. We had a good time. GLump even showed up with his new wife. I told Grammy that my friend in Vegas was going to be out of town next weekend, and she suggested we postpone the trip. We will have to see if it is just postponed or if it is canceled, since pretty soon I will be too pregnant and the weather too hot in Vegas for a road trip.

The baby shower is still on, 11:30-1:30pm at Sue's house. Sue has made invitations, but I don't think they have been mailed yet. Oh, and the final word is that Sue is NOT hosting GLump's open house on the 4th of July. They are holding it at her grandmother's in Sandy instead.

UP

Yesterday we went and saw Pixar's UP. It was great. Pregnancy hormones made me cry, of course. If you see it, you'll understand why. Funny thing was, we asked the girl that took our tickets which theater it was in - the Scera only has two and they aren't marked like the megaplexes with marquees - and she directed us to the second theater. So, we're early, we get great seats, we wait, we watch the previews, and then the features starts, but it's not a Pixar feature, it says "1492" and Werty turns to me and says, "That's not right, we're in the wrong movie." Sure enough, we were about to see Night at the Museum II. We walked into the right theater, and yup, there were lots of small children whose tickets said "UP."Thankfully, UP started a little after the other one, so we didn't miss any of our movie. As Werty put it, we had the chance to watch two sets of previews, instead of being bored for those few minutes. Since Werty saw the preview for Ice Age III twice - he has had Sid's line stuck in his head all day. "Stay asleep you wild, ferocious animal. I am your baby, and this is my milk...I thought you were a female!"

Glucose Failure

Results of my glucose test: fasting - 98, 1 hour - 241, 2 hour - 166, 3 hour - 55

I failed the first hour, failed the second hour by one stinking point, and the third hour I passed so low that the nurse gave me a snack because she was worried I might pass out. I felt fine until I starting eating the snack, then I felt really weak and wobbly. When I got home, I ate a bowl of cereal first so that I had enough strength to stand and cook myself some eggs and sausage. (Werty was stressing out too much to realize I needed help :P). Then I took a nap, I was so tired. The nurse was puzzled by my varying results, until I pointed out that I had an irregular thyroid, which can affect my metabolism. Since I failed two out of three, by ONE stinking point, I am going to be put on a gestational diabetes diet. The nurse did say that she was going to double check with my doctor about my results, just in case. Sue said that because the margin was so small on my 2 hour, I might be able to get away with a little more than she could on the diet. We shall see. I REALLY don't want to have to prick my finger repeatedly. But with my thyroid, I can see why they might want me to do the pricking and testing either way. Booger snot.

#100 - Truman's Funeral

Today we attended Truman Madsen's funeral at the Tabernacle. He is my Grandmother's first cousin. He was starting to have family history get togethers for my generation a few years ago, but then his health deteriorated. Last time Werty and I saw him was outside the Nauvoo temple, after we had just finished spending most of the day in the temple, taking a name all the way through from baptism to endowment. Truman was there filming the last section of the Church History DVD series he created a few years ago. I was nervous to go up and talk to him, but we did, and he warmly remarked what a wonderful place to run into a family relation - in front of the temple.

I realized today that I have had some wonderful experiences in learning about my family history. I have been taught about Heber J. Grant and his father Jedidiah from Truman Madsen himself. When I attended the funeral of my great-uncle, I heard the conversion story of my Scottish Condie ancestors as told by Pres. Monson. I am grateful that my wonderful husband was raised to appreciate the importance of family history and is willing to attend such events with me.

One of the most interesting stories we heard today was from one of his sons. The day that Truman gave the talk about Joseph Smith at Education Week - the talk that is still sold on CD today - the one that Zinx asked for when he was on his mission - and I think I listened to on MY mission - he had been with his family building their cabin all day. They were trying to get the exterior walls built that summer before the snow came. His son drove him to the Marriot Center, his father changed from his overalls to a suit while they were traveling, and he remembered that his father took no notes with him, he knew the prophet and his life that well.

I really loved the remarks given by Elder Scott. He addressed Ann, Truman's widow. He spoke of how our family members who have passed on are still aware of us and watch over us. He spoke from experience of losing his eternal companion, and his remarks were in line with what I spoke about on Sunday and what I have been thinking about this last week. It was an uplifting experience.
