Sleeping...

Last night I think BooBear was able to feel the baby kick again, this would be instance #2, but he's probably not sure what the feeling is. At my last doctor's visit, we listened to the heartbeat. I told him ahead of time what we were going to do. He had a look of concentration and confusion when he heard it, but then said, "More" when the doctor finished. Most of the time when he puts his hand on my belly, he waits about 3 seconds, and then says, "Sleeping" because the baby isn't moving. Last night, after feeling the baby kick, he tried to put his hand on his daddy's belly. "No, there's no baby in there, only in mommy's tummy." Aren't toddlers adorable? You know, when they aren't throwing tantrums, they are pretty angelic.

Trivia #12-16

Busy day. Had a conference, so at least I didn't have to teach today. Went to work for a parent IB meeting at 6pm. Stayed at work writing up my lesson plans for tomorrow until 9pm. For the first time, there were so many people there, that they didn't have enough seats for everyone in the Presentation's Room. The IB Coordinator had me get up and talk about my experience in IB and what I teach and what skills students learn in IB that prepare them for college. I had a parent ask about whether or not myself and my classmates had time for extra-curricular activities or service, in other words, she was asking if IB students have a life, because she used to work in the admissions office at Stanford, and she knows that colleges look at more than just grades. I told her that most of the IB students were involved in a fine art, NHS, and some of them did athletics or cheer. The IB coordinator was so excited by the number that showed up. I was also excited by the diversity of people there.

Grades REDONE!

So, the online grading and attendance program we us in our district broke down last week, just in time for grades. See, a hard drive on the server at the company (not the district) crashed. Now, there are supposed to be back-ups and redundancies to prevent data loss. But a week preceding the crash, the software program started acting up, erasing whole classes of data for some teachers, perhaps related to the imminent hardware failure, not sure. But we do know that the backup system stopped working a few days before the crash. So, we were told that we were losing 48 hours of data previous from when we finished and verified our grades. The system would be up "soon" since they convinced the company to move our problem up the pipeline as a priority. Yesterday, in staff meeting we were informed that the data loss was worse than originally thought, and it went all the way back to the 10th of this month, instead of the 16th. Whoa. But, they were able to salvage some data from the last few weeks, but not anything the last few days we were putting in final grades. So, each teacher was sent a pdf file from what they did have on the backup system, for us to weed through and decide if any of it was helpful.

Now we had been warned the week we were finishing grades that the system was acting up, and there was no guarantee that once we loaded the grades to the district for posting, if it would work. So, we were encouraged to print back up copies of our grades. Still not having a working printer, I decided to save the final grades, instead of grade reports of every assignment, since I didn't want to tie up someone else's printer for hours. Now I know how to print a simpler report, that list the assignments by class instead of by student. I swear I looked and found nothing in the report section, then looked again, oh, maybe that's it! but too late. But I felt confident because I had saved the final grades for each student, and I knew that if worst came to worst, I could give them the correct final grade.

Well, then the email goes out on Monday afternoon, after we have all lost our data. Overriding the grade to reflect the correct final grade will not be allowed. We must check every single score of every assignment for every student we teach, or we could open ourselves up to legal liability. We must have every assignment accurately documented to backup our grades. Can I deviate for a moment to point out that when I was in high school we never knew what our final grade was until our grades posted. We tried to estimate in our heads based on the scores we received on our assignments. (And we didn't sue our teachers over the grades we earned.) We didn't have up to the date daily tallies so that we could calculate what assignments we could skip and still pass the class. Sadly, that is the culture that has developed out of the online grading system. Back to my story. Well, I had already passed out all the graded assignments from last term back to the students. I even threw away those papers that belonged to students who had transferred out. I told the kids not to throw away their assignments, but there are always a few who don't listen and do it anyway. (I even provide a binder in class for them to keep current and past work in, and give them a few minutes to organize their papers in their binders when I pass them out.)

Okay, so here's the good news: I hadn't turned off my laptop since the data loss, nor had I closed the grading program since I had finished my grades. That means that all the lost data was still on my desktop. Oh, I am so lucky. So, I ran reports (that report that I finally found) which allowed me to see what information was still present after the data loss, and compared each and every score for the term with the current faulty report. Then I recorded every loss, every discrepancy. Then I cross checked with the backup pdf, so that I only had to write down those scores that were missing from both reports. In other words, I had three different reports that I had to jump back and forth from. All of the late and makeup work turned in by students and 'death bed repentance' students (the kind that turn everything in the last few days of the term) had been lost, and those scores were scattered throughout the term. So, yes, every score, item by item, student by student. Yech! There were a few assignments that didn't show up on either the new or the backup report, so thank goodness I had the original scores still on my desktop, or we would have had real problems.

They finally had the program fixed and up and running by the middle of the day yesterday. I spent about 2 hours yesterday, and another 5 hours today, but my grades are now corrected and verified once again! They aren't due until Thursday, but I have a conference that day, so I needed them done early. Plus, I have to put together 2 days of lesson plans for the sub. It's always harder to write up plans that someone else is supposed to understand and carry out.

Trivia questions to follow. Right now I am sick of being on my computer. :P

Grades are Done!

Yay! I got them done, oh, within 5 minutes of the deadline. I had to call one of the IB kids during the last 5 mins of the school day in his Math class and tell him to come see me after school. I couldn't read his handwriting on two of his assignments, and without them he was only getting a C. So, he showed up and read them to me. One of them he admitted was bad, even for him. There were a few parts he couldn't read. No really. But, grades are done. Tomorrow I am looking forward to having NO students lined up after school, so I can leave on time, get BooBear and get to my 24 week doctor's appointment. I have just entered the 6 months mark, which is good, because I can only fit into maternity clothes now, and I am starting to look bigger every week. Only one and a half terms left to go before maternity leave is what I keep telling myself. I did find a substitute for my maternity leave - a student teacher who is doing her ESL Practicum with me right now, whose a History major/TESOL minor at BYU, just like I was. She will already know some of the students, so things should be better this time around. She is also the sister-in-law of my friend Carrie from when I was in college, so that's cool. She's also pregnant, due about six weeks after me. :P

Trivia questions, one for each day this week:

#6 What are the names of Lucy's two female co-workers that she introduces to Peter's sister Mary?

#7 What exciting present did Mary's parents give her for Christmas?

#8 What does Mary accuse Jack of doing with her cereal last time he was there?

#9 What is the first thing that Lucy and Jack ever say to one another?

#10 What is Lucy's full name?

End of Term

Friday was the end of term, and the end of a really long week at work. I had a line of students each afternoon. One day, already running 45 minutes late to pick up BooBear, I had a couple of the exchange students come up to me on my way out wanting to retake all 3 vocabulary quizzes we had this term. "Tomorrow," I said. "No, now?" "No, tomorrow." One of them hadn't even bothered to study...the next afternoon he scored lower than the first time. This is the reason I may allow retakes on quizzes, but never on tests. So often, it's a waste of my time because most students who don't study the first time, don't study the second time. I am so glad to be home tomorrow for MLK day.

Meanwhile, I have a stack about 6-7 inches high of things to correct. I wish I could say I was exaggerating. Half of that is for my IB classes and includes all of their essays for the term, because I always seem to put those off.

So far, no right answers to the trivia questions (sorry Mom, Saul is the name of the next door neighbor/Peter's Godfather), but that could be because Ddonn hasn't had time to check the blogs...poor girl failed the 3 hour test, so she's going on the gestational diabetes diet and regimen. I might be taking that test next week, since I had gd last pregnancy.

Trivia #4: How much did Lucy pay for her Christmas tree?

Trivia #5: When Lucy's dad said that her mom 'gave him the world,' what was the gift she had really given him?

WYWS Trivia

As Ddonn counts down the last few months of her pregnancy and bed rest, I thought I would do something for her. Years ago, I painstakingly wrote down trivia questions from her favorite movie, "While You Were Sleeping," for a project I never finished. While getting ready for holiday guests, the questions resurfaced. Somehow, this piece of paper survived the dejunking and the move last year.

So, how about a trivia question per day to tickle your brain and funny bone? If you feel left out because you have never seen this movie - then go watch it! :P

#1. What is Lucy's "usual" at the hot dog stand?

Oh, and hope you are having a good Friday the 13th!
